Levels
The following levels will be recognised:
i) Guide;
ii) Trip Leader;
iii) Instructor;
iv) Assessor.
1. Guide
i) Function. To safely and competently
guide a raft.
ii) Requirements. As
published.
iii) Initial recognition.
Will be awarded according to
a. Experience. Candidates
must have completed a minimum of 20 training trips/river days;
and
b. Assessment. Candidates must successfully
pass theory and practical examinations conducted by an IRF
Instructor other than the one(s) under which they trained.
iv) Restrictions.
The award will be given in two categories:
a. Restricted – able to
guide on rivers up to and including Class III; and
b. Unrestricted – able to guide on rivers of
all levels.
The category awarded will be determined by
the examining Instructor according to guidelines determined by the
GT&E Committee.
2. Trip Leader
i) Function. To safely and competently
lead rafting trips.
ii) Requirements. As
published.
iii) Initial recognition.
Will be awarded according to .
a. Experience: Candidates
must have completed a minimum of 3 training trips/river days;
and
b. Assessment: Candidates must successfully
pass theory and practical examinations conducted by an IRF
Instructor other than the one(s) under which they trained.
iv) Restrictions.
The award will be given in two categories:
a. Restricted – able to
lead trips on rivers up to and including Class III; and
b. Unrestricted – able to lead trips on rivers
of all levels.
The category awarded will be determined by
the examining Instructor according to guidelines determined by the
GT&E Committee.
3. Instructor
i) Functions. To
- train Guides; and
- conduct Guide and Trip Leader assessments
in accordance with their award category (ie. Restricted or
Unrestricted).
ii) Requirements. Ongoing
recognition requires that at least two Training Programs are
conducted within the previous two year period.
iii) Initial recognition.
Candidates must
a. Experience: have a
minimum of two years experience or have completed 100
trips/river days as a Trip Leader.
b. Assesment: attend an IRF Instructor
assessment conducted by an IRF Assessor;
c. Assist: have assisted on a minimum of three
IRF-approved Guide Training Programs conducted by IRF
Instructors within the last two years;
d. Assist: on a Trip Leader assessment.
(Restricted or Unrestricted according to the Instructor level
being sought).
Assessment will be based on performance at
the Instructor assessment and reported performance on the Guide
Training Courses.
iv) Restrictions.
The award will be given in two categories:
a. Restricted – able to
train and assess Guides on rivers up to and including Class III
and to assess Trip Leader candidates for the Restricted
category; and
b. Unrestricted – able to train and assess
Guides and assess Trip Leaders on rivers of all levels.
The category awarded will be determined by
the Assessor according to guidelines determined by the GT&E
Committee.
4. Assessor
i) Functions. In addition to the functions
of an Instructor (Unrestricted), an Assessor should
a. Conduct Instructor
assessments; and
b. Assist in the functions of the GT&E
Committee
ii) Requirements.
Must
a. be an IRF Instructor (Unrestricted);
and
b. have conducted a minimum of ten IRF Guide Training Courses.
iii) Initial recognition.
Candidates must
a. Participate in an IRF
Assessor Workshop conducted by the GT&E Committee or persons
appointed by the GT&E Committee;
b. Assist on a minimum of three IRF Instructor
assessments;
c. Submit a dissertation on a subject related
to guide training and education.
Assessment will be based on performance at
the Assessor Workshop, reported performance at the Instructor
assessments, and the dissertation.
