IRF
MISSION STATEMENT
The IRF, the trustee of the rafting
tradition, maintains and promotes the conditions which encourage
the practice and the development of rafting at all competition and
recreational levels.
The IRF aims to facilitate the growing
demands of the rafting fraternity through a unified body that
deals exclusively with rafting issues and factors which influence
the development of rafting.
The IRF is principally a non-profit
orientated organisation of private law.
Rafting is a sport and recreational pursuit that is accessible to
the general public through commercial tourism operators, sport and
recreation clubs. Rafting is a low environmental impact activity
that creates awareness of conservation and environmental
appreciation while show-casing the skill elements involved in the
sport.
OBJECTIVES
Sport
Development:
a) To ensure that International Competitions are governed by
competition rules adopted by the IRF to develop the sport of
rafting.
b) Develop and maintain standards for the sport of rafting and to
safe guard the rafting industry.
c) To encourage the establishment of national rafting
organisations in countries where no such organisation exists.
Conservation:
a) To promote conservation of river environs and lobby for their
protection.
b) Promote and encourage exploration of the world�s river
systems
c) Provide an advisory resource to appropriate authorities.
Tourism:
a) To foster and promote tourism through the sport of rafting.

provide guidelines for safe rafting practices
c) To assist rafting associations to promote rafting as a safe,
accessible adventure sport in their countries.
d) To develop and produce marketing tools and activities to
promote the sport of rafting.
Education and Training:
a) Recommend river guide and river rescue
services standards and training programs.
b) Promote river environmental awareness to the general public and
river users.
c) Provide a network for international guide exchange and
networking.
DEFINITION OF RAFTING
Rafting is a human activity capable of
achieving a result requiring physical skill using paddle power in
soft and hard crafts and conducted on running rivers which, by its
nature and organisation, is competitive and is generally accepted
as being a sport.
ELIGIBILITY OF MEMBERS
To be eligible for membership national
organisations must meet the following criteria:
National Organisations – Associations
& Federations:
– be properly constituted, as evidenced by a formal written
and satisfactory constitution;
– have a satisfactory operable four-year development plan;
– be truly representative of the sport nationally and/or
locally;
– produce annual financial statements;
– produce an annual report;
– have a gender and race equity policy and be working
towards an access and equity plan;
– abide by competition standards and policies approved by
the IRF;
– be willing to assist in any IRF research and development
projects;
– abide the IRF fight against doping, violence and
environmental destruction policies.

Membership
fees
The
membership fees due for the period 2002 / 2003 is $600 for
countries competing in International IRF events and $200 for
countries not competing. This amount is to be paid to the
